This book is clearly written “by apple” or at least is written with the goal of getting the “Apple Pro Training Series” stamp of approval. That is, it manages to describe processes that are supported by Logic and not those that are required to get the job done. Logic 8 falls short on many aspects of production and song writing and it is disappointing to see this manual craftily just side-step or skip around the glaring holes in Logic and not suggest much needed workarounds that the user needs to know.

The verbose and random organization of the instructions in the book is way way way overkill also. It’s a giant list of command-option-control click this and shift-option-click-drag that. Total nightmare. There’s no way you can learn short-cuts like that.

I would love to read a book written by a producer for a producer, addressing real-world tasks, and of course using Logic 8 along the way. There doesn’t appear to be such a thing based on the reviews I’ve read so far :(

The first chapter is wonderful, but then it jumps into heavy stuff that only the Pro will want to follow. If you want to make music like you do in Garage Band, but with all the extra mixers and stuff, there has to be a simpler book. For a Pro or semi pro/teacher etc. I would give it 5 stars. For someone with my needs, I give it a 1, so I balanced it to a 3. Check it out in a book store if you can before deciding on a purchase.

This was a tough review. I have a good amount of experience in DAWs, so I’m not a beginner. I found the “PRO” title of this book to be very misleading.

I was looking for the get there quick method, and this book was NOT it. This book holds your hand and asks you to do exercises that are VERY basic. It didn’t even teach you how to change the quantization strength! (extended parameters, by the way)

This book is probably excellent for those just getting into audio. It would make a good workbook for a school. I wish I had one of these years ago when I was first learning any DAW.

I ended up just skimming the book and selling it. I never even used the CD, since I realized quickly that this was not what I was looking for. I found most of the information I was looking for instead on the Logic message board and in the manual.

The author of this book is on the message board and is a very nice and helpful person. He is also a good author and I would imagine these exercises would be very interesting to those who haven’t done them numerous times before in real-world situations on different programs.

I am giving this product a 3, since I feel that most of the information in it can be easily learned in the manual that comes with the program. I’m not giving it lower because for what it is, a workbook for beginners, it is actually pretty good. Probably a good read for someone new to DAWs, who might find the manual a bad place to start.

For those interested, I also briefly skimmed the other book in the series, beyond the basics, and found it not all that ‘beyond’.

If you have any experience with Logic, get the beyond the basics book. This book is made for people that don’t know how to make music, or just have never used a music production program before.

I bought this book because of the rave reviews. Purpose: to produce voice overs in-the-clear and over pre-recorded music. jingles or sound effects. In this book, it is extremely hard to find the basics if one just wants to lay down several voice tracks, compress, EQ and edit out breaths – instead of becoming Natalie Merchant or Sting with full-blown music productions.

This is definitely not a “For Dummies” book and can be a bit convoluted for a voice over artist – especially if one is trying to just learn the basic abilities of Apple Logic Express.
