I should really have guessed that I wouldn’t like this book as I really dislike Jeremy’s art (nothing personal, he seems like a charming & intelligent man, I just find his work very gaudy). Having said that I bought this because I’d heard good things about improving creativity etc etc.
It obviously works for some but has been utterly useless to me. Again this is probably my own fault because I can’t get past the artwork.
In short if you like Jeremy’s work this may be good for you but if you don’t I’d give it a miss.

Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist’s handbook
I am still fairly new to graphics but have a pretty good feel for finding my way around the programs from playing. I purchased this book to both learn the programs and to learn from the pros. I have just gotten the book and have not yet worked with the suggestions. However, reviewing the books contents I am very impressed with the detail provided for both using the programs and the creative ideas presented. I also love the art work presented. I would recommend this book for the moderate to highly experienced with graphic programs.

Wasn’t sure whether the book is the right level for my daughter. She’s been playing with the trial version of the software for a while. As soon as she got the book, she wouldn’t let it go!

This one was of the first Painter books I bought (several years ago) and I still feel it is one of the best, if not the best out there. It teaches the basics, but it also shows how to create paintings from photographs and have them look like they were hand painted! In addition, most of the other books I have on using Painter don’t seem to reach the “fine art” level Mr. Sutton does. It’s the difference between looking at paintings in a gallery or at a craft fair.
Painter XI came out a bit ago, so I have already pre-ordered the version for that because I haven’t been able to incorporate some of the extra material that is provided on the disk for Painter X into Painter XI. It may be possible–but I’ll just buy the updated book.
