Although there is a lot of valuable advice in this book, I found the fluffy writing tiresome, and I didn’t need many pages of another drawn out history of the development of the internet since its inception by the government. You can find better presented, and more equally valuable advice (including more technical details) in other excellent books, especially Robin William’s Web Design Workshop and Non-Designer’s Web Book.

I have met Jeffrey Zeldman at WebBuilder 2002 in Las Vegas and he gave me a copy of this book. Although the audience of the book is “traditional” designers and my background is more of a technical one, I still found it extremely useful.
Zeldman writes in a very light tone, which makes reading the book very easy and enjoyable.

As my title states, I am only a few chapters into this book, but so far it is excellent. Zeldman is witty yet technical when he needs to be. I have already purchased another copy of the book for my bosses!

I’m simply floored… this book is that good. I’ve been involved in this business for a number of years and have read or fingered through most of the “classic” books on web design (by such luminaries as Seigel and Weinman). ALA has been part of my daily regimen for quite some time and this book has already found it’s permanent home next to my keyboard. regardless of your web experience, you will find plenty of useful information in this book.
Zeldman IS the voice of the internet.

In a style those familiar with zeldman.com will instantly recognize, Zeldman covers the web from history to code, peppered with commentary only Zeldman could provide. For those who do not yet know zeldman.com, this book provides an excellent introduction, not only to the web but to a powerfully ally in the world of the web. Years ago, on the site, Zeldman started a web primer column which I, as a web professional, have referenced and referred countless others to when starting or fortifying their journey in this business. Not a step by step, how-to guide but a real introduction to what a web designer can expect to deal with in day to day life, where to look for the pitfalls, and how to use the web to its best advantage.
This is the manual EVERY web professional needs to own, use and lend to anyone interested in becoming a part of the web world. Actually scratch that. You won’t want to lend this one out… let them buy their own.
